House naming

Did you know? If you have a name for your house that there are rules as to what you can call it. These are some of the rules

  • not be duplicated within a 2 mile radius ie not within the same postcode EN.
  • not be offensive.
  • not be common such as park…, oak…, The …., High…. etc.
  • end with an appropriate suffix - house e.g ******* House.
  • Easily spelt, pronounceable and single name

The Council has the right under various Acts of parliament to set these rules. I didn’t know this until a resident who wanted to add a name to their property contacted me to as for help. Now some of the rules make sense to me. no-one wants an offensive name but why do you have to have a suffix. What is wrong with just a single word for a name?

I’m trying to find out what the actual Acts that give Barnet these powers say. But they are not available online as the newest of them the LONDON GOVERNMENT ACT 1985 – SCHEDULE 8 PARAGRAPH 14 (1) is three years older than the online records which only start in 1988.

If Barnet are adding to the Act ot have any leeway then I want to see if we can modify the rules to allow abit more leeway.
