East Barnet by-election

9 February 2007 906 views 12 Comments

Firstly congratulations to Joanna Tambourides who won the East Barnet by-election for the Conservatives. I won’t pretend we weren’t dissapointed with the result. Sean worked very hard and we did increase our vote by 5%, the only major party to increase our vote share.

Given the very short time we had it was difficult for a proper campaign to take place and the postal voters hardly saw anything of the campaign before they voted. I notice that my fellow Cllr, Robert Rams has aready accused us of a negative campaign. Well Robert, I believe we set out to raise the issues that the people of East Barnet cared about. We didn’t set out to deliberately deceive the electorate as the tories did when they quoted one of their own members letters in the local paper as if it were the papers opinion. People in glass houses should not throw stones.

The comments made about Sean Hooker are grossly unfair. Sean fought East Barnet because he lives there and cares about his local area. He is hardly a career politician as he works full time for an insurance company. Sean wasn’t at the count because he had to got to work. Had the count been held as scheduled then he would have been there.

Did he tell voters in Mill Hill that he lives in East Barnet? I bet not! You are also semi-literate!

So Cllr MacDonald, do you live in High Barnet ? – no

The election campaign was too short – What happened to Lib Dems working all year round. If you really did work all year round in East Barnet, a five week campaign would not have bothered you.

Do you think that East Barnet residents wanted a longer campaign?

As for tactics – you ought to read the letter from the Secretary of the Lib Dems in the Barnet Times, who apologised for the way you deceived the electorate in your by election last year.

And his excuse about had to cut it due to lack of room. There was enough space on that leaflet to write another story.

As for the increase in the vote. Well everyone knows that you can prove what you like with figures. If you take the core vote (ie the bottom candidate’s result in a 3 member ward as the result), then the Conservatives increased their share of the vote by 5 percentage points.

The fact is there are a lot of Labour voters out there who will never believe your Two Horse Race story again.

Two things. You know you have lost the argument when:

    1) You resort to cheap insults

    2) You don’t have the guts to say who you are

    from the second anonymous above

actually, three things, when u repeat what u have been told before on this blog re insults.

If u dont want anon statements on here, block them – but hardly democratic.

Bit like the secret ballot really.

Sean is not a professional politican -

I have been on the internet.

I find he stood in a by election in Woodhouse ward in Barnet(not local there)

A by election, which he won in Mill Hill – not a local there either.

A GLA seat in enfield – not local there.

The Chipping Barnet constituency, twice (yes he was local)

Now if that is not someone trying to be a professional politican.

No doubt the next by election in Barnet, up will pop up Sean, your friendly local candidate.

Poster number 1 was right. you can be the only major party to increase your (our) vote share – no other party will do it for you.

Guess from this, you dont write your own Focus newsletters.

I was surprised to see this on your blog as the ALDC sites say different.

    http://www.aldc.org/news/000077.html

    By-Election Results: Thursday 8TH February 2007.

    Barnet LBC, East Barnet

    Con 1666 (49.1; +4.2), Lab 1025 (30.2; -3.0), LD Sean Hooker 552 (16.3; +4.8), Green 147 (4.3; -6.1).

Majority 641. Turnout 30.6 %. Con hold. Last fought 2006.

Check your facts first or sack your council political assistant for giving you false information.

Thanks for giving the Tories more amunition – no doubt this will get seen in some Tory crap leaflet somewhere in the country.

There are different ways to calculate the percentages. Using the ALDC top candidate method distorts the result for the Green as they only fielded one candidate in May. It makes them appear to loose vote share. The reality is that they didn’t. It also distorts the result for a party where one candidate in a three candidate election has a large personal vote. No method is without flaws.

Well done Duncan I can trust you would say all the nice things

    Hold on Suzi.

You were the one who said in your blog that Sean should not have stood.

Incidently, Duncan, Chipping Barnet Lib Dem’s letter in this weeks Barnet Times, makes you look daft. I would not be happy if I were you.

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

If apologising when we get it wrong makes us look daft then fine. At least we apologised.

  • Anonymous said:

so why did not u not do it a year ago. The truth is, u did not find out about it at the time, u were happy to print it then, and it was only when it became an issue recently, that the Lib dems apologised.
