Paperwork

18 March 2007 146 views 3 Comments

One thing about being a councillor that amazes me is the sheer amount of paper you get sent. Firstly and most importantly there are the letters, emails etc from residents. Then there are the papers for the various committees that I am on. Then there are the letters. memos etc from the Council often requiring forms to be filled in and then there are the companies, charities etc who want me to know about their particular work. Then there are the invitation to events and functions. Then there are the invites to seminars, courses etc

The pile of paper in just a week can get pretty large. In the end I decided to be ruthless. Letters from residents, RA’s etc are always kept. All the rest is either filed for reference or recycled, especially if they are available electronically. When charities or other campaigning organisations write I keep it if they are doing something in my ward or are of particular interest. The rest get recycled. What would be really great would be to scan it all and keep just an electronic copy. Unfortunately that would take far to long. So as I write the in tray has been sorted, recycled, answered and is now much smaller.

See your grammar has not improved.

Did they never teach you at school the difference between “their” and “there”.

I see another month has passed and you still cannot tell us what you are doing for the people of High Barnet – except look at papers, e mails and letters. Finally, making that big decision to chuck them or file them.

Not bad for nearly £10,000 a year.

Part of the reason for this blog is to try and give people a feel for what it is like being a Councillor. That includes the mundane as well as the exciting. A lot of the work involves dealing with individual cases that cannot be published in a blog.

As far as the allowance goes, It wasn’t the Lib Dems who supported the latest rise in allowances. It was the tories.

who said anything about a rise. But if u feel that worried about it, dont claim it

Glad to see I have spured you on to write two more entries.

Maybe my vote was not wasted.
