Councillor’s surgery

14 February 2009 946 views 39 Comments

This article on Lib Dem Voice amused me. It’s an all too familiar scenario. One visitor I had recently said that they had come to ask my advice? Fair enough. I enquired what kind of advice expecting a response such as a parking problem or a planning issue or a council tax problem, but no. They just wanted my advice. I quickly established that there were no particular problems with any of these and all appropriate benefits were being claimed.

I then carefully explained that usually when someone comes to see me they want specific advice. In the end (wondering what else I could say) I offered to send them a list of appropriate council services.

I supose you’d have to be providing some sort of public service to start with.

As far as I see it, Lib Dem Councillors are a total waste of public funds. What do you think?

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

    Tannishtha

Strangely enough I disagree and there are plenty of Tories in Barnet who think the Lib Dem Councillors are rather effective as well.

  • Tannishtha Chatterjee said:

    Stop blowing your own Trumpet.

You’ve done nothing tangible for the people of High Barnet and you know it.

So you’ve written a few stories and blown a lot of hot air at Residents’ meetings; but what of real input into peoples’ lives have you managed to achieve?

  • Rog T said:

    Tannishtha,

In a democracy there is something called accountabilty. As far as I can see Duncan and the Lib Dem group in Barnet have contributed quite a lot to that. Now if you don’t believe in democratic govenrment then I guess you wouldn’t recognise that.

If you do then you shouldn’t post stupid comments. I’m not in Duncans ward but my Lib Dem Councillors – Wayne Casey and Jeremy Davies are hard working and highly thought of locally. They have made a big difference for some people by intervening on their behalf.

As to residents forum’s. I attended the Hendon Forum recently and Conservative Councillor told a certain Mrs Cohen that she was lucky to have such a hard working Councillor as Julie Johnson, who is a Labour Councillor.Strange as it may seem, local matters which have a massive effect on residents are dealt with at these forums. This may only affect a small number of people, but profoundly affect them it does.

Anyone who has attended any council meeting in recent times in Barnet will be rather glad we have our Lib Dem Councillors – and I’m saying that as a Labour supporter. I suspect many Tories would say the same.

You don’t want me to blow my own trumpet and yet you want a list of what I have done. I’m sure the electors of High Barnet will be more than capable of passing their opinion of me at the ballot box.

  • Tannishtha Chatterjee said:

Which just proves my point really – You have no significant real acheivements to speak of.

The electorate have already spoken, which is why there is only ONE lib dem cuncillor in High Barnet not three. And it’s probable that there will be zero Lib Dems councillors after the 2010 elections.
It’s also why there are no LinDems anywhere in Chipping Barnet.

The conservatives are local representatives who work all year round for the people of Barnet. [unlike the Lib Dems who you only see at election time].

Rog T adds to prove my point that only the lunatic fringe think you’re any good.

  • Joan Clarke said:

I don’t now of anyhing that the KibDems have done for the people of High Barnet. Perhaps they go into politics for the councillors allowances. I know that extra money must come in useful in these credit crunch times, especially if you’ve got a large house and family.

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

If Rog T is the lunatic fringe them I am more than happy to be associated with the Lunatic fringe.

  • Tannishtha Chatterjee said:

So, what have you done for the people of High Barnet?

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

Note to self – Stop feeding the trolls.

I’ll do you a deal send me your real name and email address and your address in High Barnet and I will give you a guided tour and show you some of the things I have done.

  • Tannishtha Chatterjee said:

Which just proves you have nothing to speak of.

    Moon Lane.

  • Tannishtha Chatterjee said:

Where is the accountability? There is no Lib Dem accountability except at election time: that’s why you only see them when there’s an election!

What have you done for Barnet?
Where are the schools that you have built? YOU OPPOSED the new schools which the Council want to build for us.
Where are the Libaries you have built? YOU OPPOSED the refurbished Libaries which the Council have given us.
Where are the nice new street lights you have built? YOU OPPOSE the nice bright street lights the Council are giving us.
Where are the low Tax rates for us? YOU HAVEN’T given us any below inflation tax rises.

What have you done for the good money we have given you?

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

    Tannishtha

Send me an email to my council email address which you can get from Barnet’s website and I’ll arrange to show you what I have done in High Barnet.

  • Tannishtha Chatterjee said:

Not true. Where is your evidence?

Where are the Libaries you have built? YOU OPPOSED the refurbished Libaries which the Council have given us.

    Not true.

Where are the nice new street lights you have built? YOU OPPOSE the nice bright street lights the Council are giving us.
Not true. I don’t like the way it’s being implemented and I don’t like replacing street lights that don’t need replacing but I’m all in favour of replacing any street light that is dangerous or not compliant with current standards

Where are the low Tax rates for us? YOU HAVEN’T given us any below inflation tax rises.

You may not have noticed but Barnet is run by a Tory administration that has failed to provide a below inflation Council tax rise. Indeed we may all be getting money back next year if they actually keep to their promise to deliver a below inflation council tax rises

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

I don’t want to meet with you. I want to know what you have done for people like me.

Oh dear what a shame. You see I believe that politics is about interacting with real people and in the case of local politics about helping them improve their area and get the best from their Council. I’m offering to show you that in action. The offer is still open.

Where is the work you have done for local people this year? Doesn’t exist, you havn’t even bothered to put out a leaflet this year.

Can you tell me what you have done for all that money you’ve accepted from the taxpayer?

We did not and do not oppose JCOSS. We do not oppose the rebuilding of East Barnet school but we do believe that the site is too small and that the proposals for the use of playing fields are inadequate.

The Lib dems oppose all the extra work being done to the Premier Parks. This proves the mith of Lib Dem Public Service.

Not true. We oppose non-premier parks losing out to premier parks but that is not the same thing.

Where is the work you have done for local people this year? Doesn’t exist, you havn’t even bothered to put out a leaflet this year.

Our last leaflet was delivered in January.

No we opposed advertising in the flowerbeds, that hardly an improvement

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

You opposed the modernisation of the Council’s IT systems.

No we opposed wasting thousands on plasma screens and computers that were going to be put in storage and become obsolete before they were used.

Would that be the leaflet dated December 2008?

No we opposed advertising in the flowerbeds, that hardly an improvement

So you did oppose the adverts which raise extra funds.
Where you planning to raise Council Tax instead or simply cut services?

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

Yes and delivered in January. Your point is?

My point is that we only see Lib Dem action in the run up to an election! Such as May

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

So you did oppose the adverts which raise extra funds.
Where you planning to raise Council Tax instead or simply cut services?

Neither as the money earned would have been extra income and it was not worth it to ruin the appearance of the flower beds.

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

We have published regular newsletters since 2002 in High Barnet. In fact many people comment that we are the only party that they hear from regularly

  • Tannistha Chatterjee said:

The previous Lib Dem leaflet was delivered during the May 2008 election!

We put out on average three leaflets a year. All our leaflets are delivered by volunteers. We have many other ways of keeping in touch such as this blog. Why don’t you try leaving a comment on High Barnet’s conservative Councillors’ blogs?

Anyway nice talking with you and the offer is still open but I have other things like casework to do so I won’t be moderating any more comments tonight.

  • Tannishtha Chatterjee said:

It seems to me that we only hear from the Lib dems in the run up to elections and if that is the case then maybe it would be wiser if you admitted to such.

Or are you saying that you don’t have enough support to deliver leaflets?

However, all can now see that you are unable to list any acheivements in a public forum….

    Hi there,

It’s the lunatic fringe here. I quite like that name! If you google “Tannishtha Chatterjee” you’ll probably decide that it maybe is an alias. It seems that the invisible men of Barnet are out in force.

I suspect that there is a hidden subtext here Duncan. Mike Freer has recieved a lot of flack for not moderating comments. I suspect that this cr*p is an attempt to get you not to bother. Just post a note saying you’ll respond when there is some sense posted. Post them all. It’s clear what this is.

Anyway back to the happy pills for me !!!!

Would Mike Freer allow a similar opendebate on his Leader Listens blog?

  • Duncan Macdonald said:

To save Tannishtha Chatterjee the bother of posting any more comments asking exactly the same question which I have already answered, this comment thread which must be the longest on the blog is now closed. If he/she wants to post comments on other posts that relate to the post then that’s fine. I won’t be however be publishing endless repetitive comments from anyone.
