The strange tale of BMW bumpers

21 October 2009 73 views One Comment

BMW bumpers are in demand, so much so that there has been a spate of BMW bumper thefts in Barnet. But here is the strange bit. The police are not investigating this because there is no evidence. Whenever a theft occurs the victim contacts the police and gets a crime number enabling them to claim on the insurance. They then get a letter telling them that the case has been closed.

I can understand the difficulty of catching the actual thief at work as most of these thefts happen at night when there is no safer neighbourhood team and in High Barnet not much chance (zero) of a police patrol car from the depths of Colindale. There must however be a chain of people handling these bumpers and finding outlets for them. It is a sad indictment of the current situation where both the police and the insurance companies are happy to let this go. Of course the BMW owner ends up paying with higher premiums plus the hassle of sorting the whole thing out.
