Full Council

15 December 2009 48 views 2 Comments

Tonight’s Council meeting decended into farce. The Tories elected the new leader of the Council Lynn Hillan. They then spent too long celebrating in the break so that there was no one there to move the administration policy item and so it was not taken. When they did all return they voted down the opposition policy item which was about signing up for the 10:10 campaign (A cross party non political campaign to aim to reduce Carbon emissions by 10% in 2010). Then having elected a new Cabinet, one of the new cabinet members who wished to raise an issue under the work of the cabinet section of the meeting found he could not do so because he was now in the cabinet. Total farce. Total disregard for the meeting. If residents ever actually saw the antics that take place at the town hall then they would be even less likely to want any involvement with local democracy.

Fiona Bulmer is out of the Cabinet – she reportedly refused to serve under Hillan. Nice to know someone in the Cabinet has principles.

Daniel Webb is in. My sources say he was going to vote for Fiona Bulmer (his ward colleague) but was then offered a cabinet post by Hillan, so he switched.

Sachin Rajput is also in the Cabinet. His inclusion is going to raise questions. Mike Freer stood down supposedly to work on his election campaign. But Sach is also a Conservative PPC – for Brent Central. Shouldn’t he be out working the constituency as well? He is either taking the p**s (and the money) or he is effectively admitting that he knows he has no chance of winning the seat. That’s hardly likely to inspire grass root Tory activists in Brent.

My source claims that Brian Gordon was also offered a cabinet post to support Hillan and he believed them. He won’t do that again!

The present Barnet Council are so out of touch with the zeitgeist of the times. They should be embracing a low carbon future and the benefits for the Borough and it’s Residents. By voting against initiatives and proposals that propel us onwards towards a low carbon future it truly demonstrates their lack of planning and general lack of interest in the welfare and future prospects of this Borough. This Council are an embarrassment.
