Is this what you voted for?

A pertinent question to those who voted Conservative in the local elections. Just a few months after those elections Tory Cllrs are voting themselves massive pay rises whilst expecting everyone else to tighten their belts. Frankly I’m not surprised. The Tories know that local democracy is broken and that many people simply don’t see any difference between local and national politics and will blindly vote locally without any reference to to competence of their local Council and its political administration. The greedy Cllrs know that in four years time only ...

Parking dilemmas

Parking is one of those subjects that are guaranteed to start an argument. One of the biggest headaches is controlled parking zones or CPZ’s. They attempt to solve a problem but usually end up simply moving the problem elsewhere. The residents of Puller, Sebright & Calvert roads in High Barnet have known this for some time. They are on the edge of the High Barnet CPZ, they do not have enough space for residents to park let alone anyone else, but as they are outside the CPZ, if you can ...

Thank you

Well we didn’t make it in High Barnet. My congratulations go to Cllrs Perry, Prentice and Longstaffe. I have enjoyed serving the residents of High Barnet during my four and a half years on the Council. I still have a number of campaigns and projects in High Barnet that I will be continuing with, so watch this space.

What’s happening in High Barnet

So far this election campaign has proved to be the most interesting and exciting for many years. The sharp and sustained rise in the polls for the Lib Dems has caught the main stream media by surprise. The question facing my colleagues and I is what effect that has had in High Barnet. The first and most noticable effect is the number of volunteers we have coming out to help us campaign. It is certainly unprecedented in my experience. On the doorstep we are beginiing to see a change. At ...

Shutting the door after the horse has bolted

The report on the Barnet and Potters Bar Times website that Barnet Council has managed to lose sensitive personal data on 9000 children during a domestic burglary is worrying enough, but I get the feeling we are in another of those situations where an individual is going to be hung out to dry for the failings of the organisation as a whole.
Unencrypted data may well have been taken out of the office against the regulations but it was obviously too easy to do so. What needs to happen urgently is ...

Duke of Edinburgh award

Council meeting 26 Jan

Tonight is the full meeting of the Council. I will be speaking on the administration’s policy item whci is about improving recycling rates. The main thrust of the item is that it is better to incentivise people to recycle by rewarding them in some way rather than taxing their polluting behaviour. I shall be arguing that we need both and that Green taxes rather than taxes on income are far better if they are not applied as a stealth tax but as part of a redistribution of the tax ...
